The Memorial Foundation Celebrates Nine Outstanding Global Change Makers

The Memorial Foundation hosted the 18th Annual “Leaders of Democracy” Awards
Luncheon on Thursday, September 25, 2025. Held annually during the Congressional
Black Caucus Foundation’s Annual Legislative Conference, the event recognizes and
honors excellence that reflects Dr. King’s vision for global equality, peace, and justice.
Since its inception, the Luncheon has served as a signature gathering of
celebration—uplifting and amplifying ongoing efforts to advance Democracy, Justice,
Hope, and Love. This year, the Foundation honored nine outstanding leaders for their
remarkable commitments and contributions to the global community.


Leader of Democracy Award for Hope
• Dr. LaTonia Collins Smith, President/CEO – Harris-Stowe State University (St.
Louis, MO)
• Mr. Nathaniel Cooper, Global Partner, Youth Development Programs (The
Bahamas)
• Mr. Algernon Cargill, Global Partner, Youth Development Programs (The

Leader of Democracy Award for Love
• Ms. Rita Coburn, Emmy Award-Winning Director, Writer, and Producer


Leader of Democracy Award for Business and Economic Parity
• Mr. Chris Womack, Chairman, President, and CEO – Southern Companies


Leader of Democracy Award for Business and Philanthropy
• Sir Franklyn Wilson, Chairman – Sunshine Holdings, LLD (The Bahamas)


Leader of Democracy Award for Justice
• U.S. Representative Lauren Underwood (IL-14th Congressional District)
• U.S. Senator Ruben Gallego (AZ)


Leader of Democracy Award for Courage
• The Honorable Wes Moore, Governor – State of Maryland
