Transformational Leaders Recognized as 2026 Leaders of Democracy

The Memorial Foundation honored five outstanding leaders during its annual “Leaders
of Democracy” Awards Luncheon, hosted on Thursday, September 17th during the
Congressional Black Caucus Foundation’s Annual Legislative Conference. Now in its
nineteenth year, the Luncheon has become one of the premier celebrations during the
week-long conference focused on community, advocacy, and civic engagement. This
year’s luncheon welcomed an audience of more than 450 guests at the Waldorf Astoria
DC for an afternoon of celebration, reflection, and connection.

Leading the list of distinguished honorees, Congressman Al Green was recognized for
his lifetime of achievements over his five decades of public service. Senator Angela
Alsobrooks was recognized as this year’s “Leader of Democracy” for Justice,
acknowledging her unyielding focus on advancing community-centered public policy.
For leveraging his platform for public good, Tim Murphy was recognized as this year’s
“Leader of Democracy” for Business and Economic Parity. To round out this year’s
honorees, the Reverends Drs. Grainger and Jo Ann Browning were recognized as
“Leaders of Democracy” for Hope and Love in recognition of their unwavering
commitment to leading through faith and service.
